Month-By-Month Guide To Travel Deals

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The economy may be improving, but many people are still reluctant to drop thousands of dollars on an exotic vacation. That doesn't mean you can't have a winter getaway; it's all about timing.

According to Travel and Leisure Magazine, if you want to stretch your travel budget, book your trip during the shoulder season. That's the short time between the high and low seasons. It hits at different times at different places and it can offer real value.

Travel and Leisure editor, Sarah Kantrowitz, has suggestions for shoulder travel destinations throughout the year.

January: Florida
This year, the sunshine state has been a bit chilly, but January is traditionally a great time in Florida. Hotels and beaches are usually empty and that means bargains abound.

March: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
"Rio is a fabulous place to travel to in March," Kantrowitz said. "It's just after Carnival and you're going to find hotel rates that are about 60% off the average rate."

April: The Caribbean and Europe
The Caribbean is hot for April, but so are many European cities. "We are particularly excited about Scotland. In Edinburg and Glasgow you can visit all sorts of cultural attractions," Kantrowitz explained.

May: The Mediterranean
Hotel prices in the Mediterranean are about 20% lower in May than they are in the summer. There are also great cruise deals too.

September: Hawaii
The water is still very warm and the crowds thin out after Labor Day.

November: The Riviera Maya, Mexico
They have great beaches at great prices and no crowds.

December: Colorado
Visit the great mountain peaks like Vail, Beaver Creek and Aspen. December hits before the peak ski season and you'll find great deals on hotels.

Hotels in San Diego, Miami Beach and Maine make Travel + Leisure best list - The Canadian Press

Posted: 30 Dec 2009 04:25 AM PST

NEW YORK — The Grand Del Mar in San Diego, The Setai in Miami Beach, Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maine, and The Palazzo in Las Vegas, are among the new properties that made Travel + Leisure magazine's list of the 500 best hotels in the world.

The list also includes 66 properties that offer rooms for US$250 a night or less, including the Inn on the Alameda, Santa Fe, N.M.; Hotel Lucia, Portland, Ore.; and Rockhouse Hotel, Jamaica.

The No. 1 hotel in the U.S., according to the magazine, was the Inn at Palmetto Bluff, in Bluffton, S.C. Other top domestic hotels included the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch, in Beaver Creek, Colo.; the Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Fla.; the Halekulani in Oahu, Hawaii; and The Carlyle in New York.

The list is based on the magazine's 2009 World's Best Awards readers' survey results. As part of the survey, Travel + Leisure readers rated hotels on several characteristics including rooms/facilities, location, service, restaurants/food, and value. The complete survey methodology is available on http://www.travelandleisure.com/worldsbest.

All 500 properties are featured in the January issue of Travel + Leisure and on http://www.travelandleisure.com/tl500.
