Patrol seizes more than 4 pounds of mushrooms - Caspar Star-Tribune

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Highway Patrol made a record seizure Tuesday: more than four pounds of psilocybin mushrooms.

It was the largest single seizure of the hallucinogenic mushrooms ever by the patrol, according to a media release from Sgt. Stephen Townsend.

The release said the yield would have an approximate street value of $2,633.

The haul was made during a traffic stop conducted on an eastbound passenger vehicle traveling 84 mph in a 75 mph zone on Interstate 80, 13 miles west of Laramie, according to the release.

The trooper arrested the driver, 25-year-old Anthony Devries of Boulder City, Nev. Devries was the only occupant in the vehicle.

The trooper reported Devries was very nervous and lacked the answers to some very simple questions.

According to the release, the trooper requested a drug-detecting K-9 from the Albany County Sheriff's Department. The dog alerted on the rental vehicle's trunk area. When officers opened the trunk, they discovered four previously opened cereal boxes. Inside the boxes they discovered the dried psilocybin mushrooms.

Devries was taken into custody without incident and was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. The charge is a felony and Devries could face up to 10 years in prison and fined up to $10,000 or a combination of both.

Hallucinogenic mushrooms such as psilocybins are illegal to possess and cultivate. Users usually eat the caps and stems of the mushrooms, either fresh or dried.

Psilocybin mushrooms can be found in the wild, however, the majority of seized mushrooms are cultivated for illegal sale.

Troopers have requested the assistance of special agents with the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation. It is believed that Devries was coming from Eugene, Ore., and traveling through Wyoming on his way to a final destination in Chicago.
