Toll increasing across the state - KFOR Posted: 04 Aug 2009 09:38 AM PDT OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma drivers traveling our state turnpikes will have to start paying more to travel those roads starting Tuesday. A 16 percent increase is being applied to most Oklahoma toll roads. Jack Damrill, with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority says the increase is necessary to make up for budget shortfalls. Monday crews were out across the state changing the prices on more than 700 toll signs. The signs were then covered up. They will be uncovered at midnight when the new prices go into affect. Along the Kilpatrick Turnpike many vehicles currently pay 30-cents to exit or get on the turnpike; however, starting Tuesday those cars will pay 35-cents. Along another popular toll road, the Turner Turnpike from Oklahoma City to Tulsa, the current cost is $3.50. Starting Tuesday the price will be $4. Damrill says this is the first increase in eight years. Contact KFOR News directly by clicking here if you would like to submit a news story tip or suggestion. Copyright 2009 KFOR-TV-DT. WA woman drowns after falling overboard during Alaska cruise - kgw.com Posted: 04 Aug 2009 09:09 AM PDT Malkuch was reported missing by a traveling companion Monday morning when the Holland America ship Zaandam was in Glacier Bay National Park, about 75 miles northwest of Juneau. She was last seen hours earlier after she ordered room service, when the vessel was near Alaska's Douglas Island. A woman's body was found Monday afternoon after a massive search but troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said that body hasn't been positively identified. However, Coast Guard Lt. Nathaniel Johnson in Juneau said Monday night his agency has suspended its search. Malkuch was traveling on a seven-day cruise that left Seattle on Friday. State troopers planned to meet the cruise ship when it docks Tuesday in Sitka, Ipsen said, adding they would be talking to the woman's companion and anyone else who could help explain how she disappeared off the vessel. The body was taken to Juneau for positive identification. Ipsen said an autopsy would be standard procedure. The crew of a commercial helicopter operated by Ketchikan-based TEMSCO Helicopters that was helping in the search found the body at about 4:30 p.m. Monday on the west side of Douglas Island. That's about 12 miles northwest of where the passenger was last seen, Chief Petty Officer Dana Warr said. Warr said there was no immediate sign of foul play or indication that any of the Zaandam's survival gear was missing. Footage from the ship's security cameras will likely be reviewed, Warr said, adding much remains unknown about the circumstances of the disappearance. Seattle-based Holland America Line said in a statement that the woman was reported missing at about 9 a.m. Monday by the person she was sharing a room with. Warr said it was unclear why that person didn't report her missing earlier. Holland America spokeswoman Sally Andrews did not return several calls late Monday seeking additional information, including confirmation of Malkuch's hometown. Ipsen said she did not have a hometown for the missing woman. The 780-foot-long Zaandam has a capacity for about 1,430 passengers and 600 crew members. Monday's search, which included a Coast Guard helicopter, focused on a vast region surrounding Douglas Island and the national park, which are 80 miles apart, Warr said. The glacier-fed waters in the area are 57 degrees. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Russian Soccer Fans Urged to Drink Whiskey to Ward Off Swine Flu Virus - FOX News Posted: 04 Aug 2009 10:07 AM PDT Russian soccer fans have been told to drink whiskey on their trip to Wales for next month's World Cup qualifier to ward off the H1N1 swine flu virus, the head of the country's supporter association (VOB) said Monday. "We urge our fans to drink a lot of Welsh whiskey as a form of disinfection," VOB head Alexander Shprygin told Reuters. "That should cure all symptoms of the disease." Russia's Health Ministry has issued a public warning against traveling to Britain because of the spread of the H1N1 virus but Shprygin said he expected at least several hundred fans would go to Wales for the September 9 qualifier in Cardiff. "Health officials say this virus is very dangerous but being a fan myself I can tell you that for a real fan nothing is more important than the well-being of the team," said Shprygin, who also sits on the executive board of the Russian FA. "Russian fans don't fear anything or anybody so this virus will not stand in our way of supporting our team." The Russian FA also said health issues should not prevent fans from traveling. "We don't want our team to be without any support for such an important match so we urge our fans to go to Wales despite the health warning," a spokesman said. Germany lead European Group Four with 16 points from six games, one ahead of Russia, with Wales in fourth place on nine points from seven matches. U.S. 287 crash sends three people to hospitals - Coloradoan Posted: 04 Aug 2009 09:31 AM PDT A multiple-car accident Monday along U.S. Highway 287, south of Loveland near Campion, slowed traffic and sent at least three people to the hospital. Witnesses said about 3 p.m. a southbound Acura veered into a white Chevrolet sedan traveling north, then clipped a red Chevy truck also traveling north before coming to rest on the east side of the road. Loveland and Berthoud paramedics and firefighters extricated at least two people from the Chevrolet and one from the Acura. All were transported to area hospitals. Jerry Norlan was driving the Chevy truck and said he tried to drive into the ditch after seeing the impact with the car in front of him. "He came right across the road, and those people took the brunt of it," Norlan said, motioning to the wrecked white car. Norlan was not hurt. His mother, Kelly Keller, was driving their Volkswagen van north next to Norlan's truck when the accident happened. She swerved out of the way, concentrating on the road, while her son, Jacob, 11, watched the accident unfold. "It was pretty scary," the boy said. "They just collided and spun, and all the pieces went up in the air, like it was raining." Debris from the accident spread about 100 yards on the road, with the Acura coming to rest on the south end of the scene from the Chevrolet. The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the accident.
