Dallas--February 17, 2010--Motel 6's Phoenix design has been named winner of the 2010 Travel + Leisure Design Award for Best Large Hotel. The winning design, developed by Priestmangoode of London, is Motel 6's first new prototype in 12 years and is reinventing the economy lodging experience.  The design, both chic and efficient, is fresh and modern, while staying true to the brand's no-frills values – and still at the lowest price of any national chain.

The Phoenix design features wood-effect flooring, ambient lighting, settee area for two, and a 32-inch flat-screen TV. The entertainment unit which houses the TV conceals the door-less wardrobe behind it, combining two needs into one unit. The entertainment unit features a multi-media panel with A/V plug-ins for mp3 players, video game systems and laptop computers.

The settee area, situated in the corner of the room, was designed to encourage and allow for interaction between guests, whether during meals, discussions or games. The modern bathroom features double doors, black granite counter top with a vessel/raised sink, a walk-in shower and a large vanity area. The pedestal bed allows for storage of luggage under the bed and allows for easy cleaning access and visibility.

"The main objective of the new design was to provide added value to our guests and franchisees, while also minimizing our environmental footprint" said Olivier Poirot, CEO for Accor North America, Motel 6 and Studio 6. "Priestmangoode designed a room that adds value, comfort and style to our guests' experience at Motel 6."

Motel 6 unveiled the Phoenix prototype in 2008. New locations and existing properties around the country are currently being modeled after the new design. Currently, more than 60 properties nationwide have been renovated, including locations in Dallas, San Diego, Houston and Chicago.  Another 60+ locations are slated for renovation in 2010.

Frequent Fliers: Travel + Leisure magazine's Nancy Novogrod - Reuters UK

Nancy Novogrod is the editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure magazine (www.travelandleisure.com). She lives in New York and travels extensively every year. She spoke to Reuters about managing her travel.

Q: How many flights a year do you estimate you take each year? Which is your most frequent route?

A: "I usually take around 30 flights a year, which includes one or two trips to London, L.A., and Italy (I'm figuring in vacation in the south of Italy, too), Hong Kong (as a jumping-off point for Southeast Asia and China), Delhi (with visits elsewhere in India), Latin America, and, recently, Dubai."

Q: What is the most important factor in choosing an airline?

A: "Easy connections and familiarity. I usually fly on the same U.S. airline, which has a good business-first section, good coverage of destinations, and a huge cluster of my frequent-flier miles.

Q: What was your worst travel experience?

A: "I have been very lucky (and I hope I'm not jinxing it now). Other than a couple of missed connections and canceled flights, some bumpy rides, and long lines, which I tune out on, I've never had a truly terrible experience. Even in the Himalayas, western Ukraine, and the high desert of Chile."

Q: How do you deal with jetlag? Any tricks for sleeping on flights?

A: "After having had some bad experiences with a particular well-known sleeping pill, I now use a prescription medication that's more of a relaxant. I take it right after take-off, and always order the executive meal or quick meal. One thing I never skip: the cocktail nuts, just in case I hate the rest of it. If I arrive in the morning, I try to exercise before my first appointment, to clear my head."   Continued...
