Travels in Cyberspace: The Monday Report - New York Times (blog)

Forget the Winter Olympics in Vancouver or the World Cup in South Africa. For music fans, the hottest ticket for 2010 will be the Coachella festival in California. So says Jaunted, which in a recent post, announced both the festival's dates for 2010 and offered advice on how to get tickets.

The weekend indie festival will kick off on April 16, and a three-day pass to the entire event will cost $269 a person. According to Jaunted, attendees can buy their tickets through a layaway plan, with a 50 percent down payment due by Feb. 15, 2010. Also, for the first time, car-camping reservations are being offered, with prices starting at $55 for a reserved spot. As the festival's Web site explains, "If you've camped with us at Coachella before, you're probably used to parking and lugging your gear. Now you can park your car right next to your tent."

Meanwhile, the folks at Jaunted are definitely psyched. As the Web site puts it, "Feel free to start crossing your fingers for an Arcade Fire headlining gig now."

A Great Traveling Companion

Ever hear of Nicolas Bouvier? No? Well, luckily, Tom Swick has. Writing for the travel site WorldHum, Mr. Swick says he was given a copy of Bouvier's "The Way of the World" last year — a book about the Swiss travel writer's journey in the 1950s through the Balkans, Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan – and was immediately smitten.

Here, for example, is a typical passage, as quoted by Mr. Swick, a longtime travel writer himself, "Sitting in a row behind a table covered in half-empty litre bottles, five gypsies in their forties, five dirty, tattered, wily, distinguished gypsies, strummed their patched instruments and sang." As Mr. Swick puts it, "A writer who can waylay me with the perfect outsider adjective ('distinguished') and nail a socio-economic milieu with another ('patched') is someone I would go anywhere with." Mr. Swick said sentences like these demonstrated Bouvier's "painterly ability to capture a scene with a few omnipotent words."

Mr. Bouvier died in 1998, just short of his 70th birthday, having worked as a freelance photographer and also having published several other travel books besides "The Way of the World." As Mr. Swick raves, "Reading Bouvier, you are constantly torn between lingering over an unforgettable line (or paragraph) and turning the page to see what prizes await."

"The Way of the World" is available through Amazon, with a recent paperback edition selling for $11.53.

Uruguay: The Next Hot Spot?

Is Uruguay finally getting its moment in the sun? Carry On, the daily blog from Travel & Leisure magazine, reports that a flashy new airport in Montevideo (designed by the Uruguay-born, New York-based architect Rafael Viñoly) and the scheduled opening of a new boutique hotel in what was a Victorian-era mansion owned by the country's president are signs that this often-overlooked South American destination is on the verge of getting some tourism love. "Things are popping down there," the magazine states, "and it won't be long before everyone figures it out."

Partying in Mexico City

If you're looking for a great weekend escape right about now — something to take your mind off the slush-filled streets and the bone-chilling temperatures up and down the Eastern Seaboard – New York magazine recommends a quick trip to Mexico City. In particular, the magazine's Web site recommends the late-night music scene there, from the "cutting edge electro acts" at clubs like Pasagüero or El Imperial or the vibrant dance parties at ButterFlies (formerly Buttergold),"the megasize disco with five bars and twice-nightly drag revues that draw as many straight folks as gay."
