Christkindlmarkt: A holiday shopping tradition - Allentown Morning Call

Christmas carols fill Bethlehem's streets as busloads of shoppers arrive for the annual Christkindlmarkt, the city's version of a traditional Christmas market common in Germany.

Since 1993, Christkindlmarkt has been attracting more then 60,000 visitors to the two huge tents pitched along the Monocacy Creek.

Inside, away from the chill, shoppers are treated to a host of vendors and craftspeople offering unique gifts and decorations, some from Germany.

As the crowd shops and eats, musicians entertain with seasonal tunes. In the courtyard, ice sculptors carve away with chainsaws while glassblowers work with fire. Children can find St. Nicholas waiting for them in the back of the craft tent.

The event, which was called one of the top holiday markets in the world by Travel and Leisure Magazine, continues through this weekend: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 (free for 12 and younger).
