Travel and Leisure magazine has named Taos as one of the "best destinations on Earth to spend Christmas."

The publication selected its Top 10 cities based on their unique qualities and attractions, which create "the most unforgettable experiences during the Christmas season." Other cities include Kaikoura, New Zealand, and the coastal Portuguese colonial town of Paraty, about 140 miles south of Rio de Janeiro, (Brazil) on the Atlantic ocean.

Taos is described in the December article as being "especially magical at Christmas, thanks to its rich mix of cultural traditions." Must-see Christmas events and sites to visit that are highlighted in the article are:

•The historic Lighting of Ledoux

Taos Pueblo's Christmas Eve Celebration

Taos Ski Resort

•The El Monte Segrado Living Resort and Spa

•The seven table Byzantium Restaurant on Ledoux Street

Mesa's Edge and Kimosabe jewelers

The Lighting of Ledoux is scheduled for Dec. 12 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with luminarias and farolitos illuminating the street and surrounding area. Several Taos galleries and museums near and along Ledoux Street will be open during the event. Organizers say there will be music, food and entertainment.

The Taos Pueblo Christmas Eve celebration, known to locals as the "Procession of the Blessed Mother," is open to the public and events will include bonfires, mass at dusk and tribal dancing. The Taos Ski Valley ski resort is scheduled to open Nov. 26 and is open on Christmas day.

The Byzantium Restaurant was featured for its new winter menu and for serving a holiday dinner on Christmas Day. The restaurant says reservations are "highly recommended" (call (575) 751-0805).

In mentioning Mesa's Edge and Kimosabe, the article underscored Taos' "locally produced, mostly silver jewelry, including traditional Native American styles."

Taos is seated on the high-desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. It is known for its landscape, food and art. Taos is 135 miles north of Albuquerque and 72 miles from Santa Fe, and accessible in less than a day by most large cities in surrounding states. For more information on events in Taos, click here.
