Getting around on a hack... - BikeRadar.com

Posted: 29 Oct 2009 08:17 AM PDT

The last month or so has been a new experience for me as, since my university days anyways, I have always had a fairly decent bike to commute on. Riding The Pig has been quite an experience. Fun, but certainly not something I want to prolong for longer than is needed. My thoughts:

Pros:
- I don't worry, or care too much for the possibility that it may bet stolen. Not as much an issue for work and back, but as The Pig is my primary means of transport it often has to be locked up out and about.
- Road surface issues no longer matter. 26"x1.4 non-sporty commuter tyres smooth out cattle grids, let alone ridges and bumps. I expect they'll be fairly PF resistant given their robust construction. The relatively cheap MTB wheels are very strong and so I've stopped slowing down for many obstructions that I used to be careful about before (like those nasty bolt down speed bumps we have at work). What drain covers?
- Given I do a lot of travel by train with my bike, it is also great not to care about some twit damaging my bike by him dumping his on mine. Happened too many times before. Less stress.

Cons:
- It is slow. It is mostly the heavy wheels and basic commuter tyres, but it takes some winding to get up to speed. Great when I'm feeling good, terrible when I'm feeling a bit off-colour.
- Bad handling. Even new it was a fairly cheap bike; the geometry isn't great, head angle is too slack, seat angle too steep. Front end is skittish. Also the basic commuter tyres don't have much grip, especially in the wet.
- Heavy! Taking trains a lot, it is a pain in the erse to carry up and down stairs!

At the moment, I'm still happy to ride it - but I am looking forward to when I can stick it somewhere to keep as a spare or a pub bike and get myself something more suitable for the daily commute. Something like a Condor Gran Fondo maybe... Wink

Not too sure when that will happen though, as I'm already contemplating a XC/marathon race bike for the 2010 season…

Oh well.

State Board of Accounts orders reimbursement from five

The Herald Bulletin

CHESTERFIELD, Ind. — Five Chesterfield town employees, including Town Marshal James Kimm, misappropriated more than $250,000 during a two-year period, the State Board of Accounts charged in an audit released Wednesday.

Kimm and former Clerk-Treasurer Christopher Parrish were alleged to have spent $52,553 on unsubstantiated travel and reimbursement claims.

Kimm, Parrish and former police officer Joseph Brown charged the town $115,391 in the unsubstantiated repair of town equipment. They reportedly turned in 24 invoices for repairs, mostly to police vehicles, from a local auto repair shop.

However, the invoices appeared to have been created using standard word processing, the audit noted. The town checks were made payable to the auto shop and endorsed by Brown. Brown and Kimm are half-brothers, the audit said.

The audit covers the period of Jan. 1, 2007 to Jan. 1, 2009. The State Board of Accounts has ordered full reimbursement.

Look for a full report in The Herald Bulletin on Friday.

Tips for keeping Halloween safe - Pharos-Tribune

Tips for keeping Halloween safe

Just a reminder that trick-or-treaters will be out in force on Friday and Saturday nights, so be careful out there. Unfortunately, Logansport got a real-life reminder of the danger that goes along with the fun when two children ran in front of a pickup truck on the first night of trick-or-treating two years ago. One of the youngsters wound up in a Fort Wayne hospital, and what had been an evening of fun turned into a nightmare for one Logansport family.

Before the kids head out this year, here are some tips every parent might want to pass along:

• Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside the house.

• Visit only houses with the lights on.

• Don't cut through alleys and fields. Walk on sidewalks and driveways.

• Look both ways before you cross the street and then cross only at the corner or in a crosswalk.

Parents should also make sure every child's costume is short enough that it doesn't become a tripping hazard, and try make-up instead of a mask. A mask can obstruct a child's vision, which can make crossing the street and going up and down stairs a bit dangerous.

Make sure children wear light colors or put reflective tape on their costumes.

Don't let the kids go out alone. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult, and older children should stay with friends.

Map out a safe route so you'll know where your kids will be. If children are out after dark, make sure they have flashlights and travel on well-lighted streets.

Children should eat no treats until they get home and their parents have had a chance to check the treats in a well-lighted place.

Police will be out in force on Friday and Saturday nights in an effort to make sure that a fun evening stays fun.

Officers will be especially on the lookout for anyone who is up to any Halloween tricks.

If you're out driving, slow down a bit and keep your eyes open for ghosts and goblins.

Let's make it a safe and happy Halloween.
