Police arrested a driver and a passenger Saturday after finding both of them to be intoxicated while two young children rode with them, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Joshua Daniels, 22, and Micky Page, 22, both of Evansville, are each being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail. Page is facing preliminary charges of child neglect and public intoxication while Daniels is preliminarily charged with operating while intoxicated and operating without a license.

An Evansville Police Department officer stopped Daniels' sport utility vehicle about 9:15 p.m. after spotting it traveling eastbound on Franklin Street near Fulton Avenue without a visible license plate light.

Police say Daniels admitted having several drinks before agreeing to take field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was then taken to jail, where an intoxication test revealed a blood-alcohol level 0.12, according to the affidavit.

Page - the mother of a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old who were in the SUV - admitted she was drunk and gave the keys to the vehicle to Daniels so he could drive, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in her case.

"The defendant stated she didn't think Mr. Daniels was nearly as 'drunk' as she," Officers Steve Hicks and Shawn Smith wrote in the affidavit. "In her intoxicated state, the defendant could not properly care for her dependent children."

The children were released to Page's father.

Bond for Page was set at $500 cash while Bond for Daniels was set at $2,000 cash. His operating while intoxicated charge was upgraded to a class D felony because children were in the vehicle, police said.

Police Were Trying To Stop Motorcycle; 2nd Rider Injured

POSTED: 10:38 am EDT August 16, 2009
UPDATED: 10:54 am EDT August 16, 2009

One person died and another suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday night after their motorcycle, traveling the wrong way on divided Route 125, collided with a minivan at the Petro King gas station.

Police said the motorcycle was traveling south on Route 125 shortly before 8 p.m. and entered Plaistow at a high rate of speed after police unsuccessfully tried to stop it in Kingston. Once in Plaistow, the motorcycle continued to speed as it approached a divided portion of Route 125 near the Petro King station at 119 Plaistow Road.

Evidence at the scene indicates that the motorcycle then traveled to the wrong side of the median, traveling south in the northbound lane of the divided roadway. It then struck a minivan, which was turning into Petro King.

The two riders on the motorcycle were thrown from the bike and suffered life-threatening injuries. They were transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where one was pronounced dead.

The other was transported to Mass General in unknown condition. The one person in the minivan was transported to Parkland Medical Center in Derry for evaluation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Bollywood superstar's US 'detention' prompts outrage - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 16 Aug 2009 10:50 AM PDT

NEW DELHI - India reacted with outrage Sunday after Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he was detained for questioning at a U.S. airport, though immigration officials denied he was formally held.

Fellow Indian film stars and political leaders condemned what they called "humiliating" treatment given to Khan, a Muslim who is well-loved in a largely Hindu country. One Cabinet minister suggested a "tit-for-tat" policy toward Americans traveling to India.

Khan said he was detained Friday by U.S. immigration officials at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey because his name came up on a computer alert list.

The actor is in the U.S. to promote a new film, "My Name is Khan," which is about racial profiling of Muslims after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The story was front-page news in India, where the ability to avoid being frisked at airports is seen as a status symbol. Politicians, sports celebrities and film stars often claim VIP status to avoid security checks.

"My name is Khan? Too bad. SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) feels the heat of American paranoia" said The Times of India, quoting Khan as saying he felt "angry and humiliated."

Khan later downplayed the incident. "I think it's a procedure that needs to be followed, but an unfortunate procedure," he told reporters Saturday in suburban Chicago.

U.S. customs officials told The Associated Press that Khan was questioned as part of a routine process that took 66 minutes. Spokesman Elmer Camacho said Khan was not detained, "but it took a little longer because his bag was lost by the airline."

Enraged fans on Sunday, however, planned to protest the incident with a demonstration near India's Parliament.

"Shocking, disturbing n downright disgraceful. It's such behavior that fuels hatred and racism. SRK's a world figure for God's sake. Get real!" actress Priyanka Chopra said on her Twitter feed.
