| FBI Raids Travel Agency to Investigate Missing Somalis - Voice of America Posted: 08 Aug 2009 06:20 AM PDT The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation searched the office of a Minnesota travel agency this week for clues to the disappearance of 20 Somali-American men believed to be fighting in Somalia's civil war. Omar Jamal, spokesman for the Somali Justice Advocacy Center, says the owner of Amana Travel was approached several months ago by two young men who wanted to travel to Somalia. Jamal says the owner, Ali Mohamud, refused to book the tickets when he learned the young men's parents were unaware of their plans. But about 20 Somali-American men from the Minnesota area, including those two young men, have disappeared in the last two years. They are believed to be in Somalia fighting with the Islamist militant group al-Shabab against the Somali government and its allies. The U.S. considers al-Shabab a terrorist group. One of the young men who disappeared, 19-year-old Jamaal Baana, was reported killed during fighting in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital. A Somali-American man has already pleaded guilty in a U.S court to providing material support to terrorists, and another says he will plead guilty to the same charge. Amana Travel owner Mohamud is facing separate charges of fraud and felony theft, for allegedly taking money for tickets he never bought and pocketing the refunds of tickets he canceled. Large numbers of Somalis came to the United States after the fall of Somalia's last stable government in 1991. Many of them settled in Minneapolis, a large city in Minnesota. | Local travel agencies fare well despite economy - Times Daily Posted: 08 Aug 2009 07:39 AM PDT On the one hand, people have less money to spend on travel. And for those who can, a barrage of online options are available to book a vacation, thus cutting out the middle man. Welcome to a day in the life of a Shoals travel agent - Recession edition. Yet, the manager of Travel Unlimited Inc. doesn't anticipate closing up shop. It's simple, she said. "You just have people who don't want to deal with the hassle of travel preparation," she said. Also, the entrenched, older population is more hesitant about booking a trip from the computer, she said. Right after those words left her mouth, an older client walked into the shop. Murphy said the down economy has produced significant deals from tourism spots desperate for customers. In the past year, she has booked more Disney World trips than she can remember during her three decades with the agency. She attributed that to the gauntlet of promotions Disney continues to push, such as a free park entrance on your birthday. Debbie Thigpen, owner of Ideal Travel Inc. in Florence, said she has not noticed a steep decline in people traveling. Instead, they are doing it last minute, only when they are sure they won't need to work, she said. As a result, they don't go as far away from home, often cutting out the need for someone else to make more extensive plans. "I don't think traveling has really dropped overall," Thigpen said. "I've done a lot of trips to Gulf Shores, a lot of last-minute trips. People are still looking for that personal attention, though." Debbie Wilson, Florence-Lauderdale tourism director, acknowledged that the Internet is eating into travel agents' business, but said they are still relevant. She said her office makes sure to drop off material promoting Florence with travel agents in Nashville and other neighboring cities. A recent stop with a St. Louis travel agent, for example, lured a handful of golfers to the area. "It's not a market that we put tons of money into," she said of her department. "But it can be useful for people who have already booked, say, that big trip to Europe and are looking for day trip options." The quandary was on full display just a couple of strides outside Murphy's Seminary Street agency. Regina Jones power-walked right past her business. She doesn't plan on dropping by. "Why would I pay someone to do what I can do myself?" she asked. "Besides, I'm not going on vacation anytime soon." Brian Hughes can be reached at 740-5720 or brian.hughes@TimesDaily.com. | Obama to travel out West - Associated Press Posted: 08 Aug 2009 03:35 AM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House is announcing that the first family will travel to national parks in the West next week. President Barack Obama and his family will visit Bozeman, Mont., Yellowstone National Park, Grand Junction, Colo., the Grand Canyon and Phoenix. Spokesman Robert Gibbs says the trip is meant to encourage people to visit the national park system, and it will occur during a "fee-free" weekend for national parks. And, he said Obama also will promote his policies during the trip. The president also is expected to hold town hall style meetings at some of the places as he pushes Congress to pass an overhaul of the health care system. While on his Western swing, Obama is to address the convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, being held in Phoenix. It's a summertime tradition for presidents. © 2009 The Associated Press.
